The righteous mind review6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() The Bible also teaches that we operate as both individuals and as groups, etc. The Bible also teaches that those intuitions can be trained through culture, law, parents, etc. ![]() The Bible also bases its moral laws on various moral foundations (harm/care, fairness, proportionality, liberty, sanctity, etc.). For instance, the Bible also teaches that we have “innate” moral intuitions. And a lot of his main points coincide very well with a biblical point of view. He just assumes that they will be self-evident to the reader.ĥ) The end result is that a lot of the descriptive parts of the book are very helpful for understanding individuals, politics, and culture. He makes many moral judgments throughout the book, but doesn’t have any of the tools to back them up. He ultimately argues for a sort of utilitarianism that is less individualistic, but does not (cannot) explain how he got to that conclusion. It’s helpful, for Haidt, it (along with morality) is an illusion.Ĥ) This leaves Haidt’s “oughts” hollow. He is, therefore, relatively friendly towards religion. For Haidt, both arose out of natural group selection because they helped groups outperform other groups. He offers an account of the origin of morality and religion that is purely evolutionary. This by itself is worth the price of the book.ģ) My deepest critique of the book is not of Haidt as a moral psychologist, but Haidt as a philosopher. ![]() 2) Related: Everyone should familiarize themselves with Moral Foundation Theory and how/why it divides conservatives, progressives, and libertarians. ![]()

The Gilded Wolves follows a group of talented misfits-led by the ambitious Séverin-on a treasure hunt for a magical artifact that could alter the future of civilization. Roshani Chokshi's The Gilded Wolves delivers on all counts. Here is a short list of things I love in my YA fantasy: a widely diverse cast of characters, a unique magic system, rollicking adventure, and pointed criticism of colonialism. ![]() Astonish me review6/29/2023 ![]() Though it spans three decades, “Astonish Me” is a strikingly svelte book, composed of short, intense scenes that move back and forth in time and around the world. Something of a ballet’s structure is reflected in these pages. If you live in that brutal, beautiful world - or especially if you still long for it - this is a novel you must read. ![]() ![]() “You can’t be weak in the ballet,” Shipstead writes, “or it’ll crush you.” In pursuit of the perfect line, extension and turnout, they sacrifice their own bones. The genetically blessed ones must worship unrelenting precision. Despite their mothers’ cooing, little girls in tutus learn early that their hips are too wide, their thighs too fat, their tolerance for pain too low. The world of ballet, after all, is not a particularly funny one. So it takes a few measures to realize that her second novel, “Astonish Me,” performs a dramatic changement. Her take on a sniping corps of cutthroat ballerinas could be another bravura comedy. ![]() ![]() Shipstead can be fantastically witty about the anxieties and humiliations of middle age. I’ve been looking forward to it since I read her debut, “Seating Arrangements.” That button-down satire of the Martha’s Vineyard set was the smartest romantic comedy of 2012. As the son of a retired dance teacher and the husband of a former dancer and the father of a current dancer, I felt the beat of Maggie Shipstead’s new ballet novel even before the curtain rose. ![]() ![]() Walker takes lead on the mournful Hank Williams Sr. The result is a diverse collection that spotlights some of the best-loved gems on America’s musical landscape.
